HEALTHY DISCUSSION – Jan. 1, 2022 – Shockingly, ONS statistics report that it was also responsible for almost 9,000 UK deaths in 2020 alone. So why is it still so heavily ingrained in everything we do? From our social lives to university and into our professional careers, alcohol isn’t just something we place on the fun pedestal – it’s woven into our everyday fabric. Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, Professor David Nutt, professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London, explains why it’s so difficult for us to change our attitudes when it comes to alcohol. ‘Many centuries of use, especially…

YOU KNOW THEY ARE – Jan. 1, 2022 – When china’s government censors books, bars “effeminate men” from television or spoon-feeds Communist Party dogma to schoolchildren, liberals agree that its behaviour is shockingly repressive. But when in August it banned children from playing video games for most of the week, liberals who happened to be parents were in two minds. Yes, restricting the under-18s to an hour of gaming a day, on only three nights a week, was rather drastic. But perhaps it might be good for them? China’s government argues that video games are addictive. This fear is…

IT IS ONE DAY AT A TIME – Dec, 27, 2021 – Like those 6.5 million folks trying Dry January this year, my own sobriety also began as a challenge. And while I’m grateful for my personal journey, I wish I was more respectful to folks with long-term sobriety when I was in the “let’s try this whole sober thing” phase. Gone are the days when one must attend a 12-step meeting and identify with the A-Word (alcoholic). The only prerequisite to evaluating your relationship with alcohol is the desire to be “sober curious.” Maybe I’d have stopped drinking…

CAN THIS BE TRUE? –   Dec. 20, 2021 – Researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure the brain responses of cocaine addicts and patients with HIV while participants played a game that involved purposefully withholding responses to target stimuli. “The challenging thing about the game we asked participants to play isn’t exactly playing it, per se,” said Kathryn Mary Wakim, Ph.D., a recent graduate from the Neuroscience Graduate Program at the University of Rochester and the first author of the study. “What’s really hard is not playing the game. What we wanted to measure was how the…

LEGALIZE THEM – Dec. 2021 – Twenty years later, we have just witnessed a historically high annual mortality rate of 100,000 dead from drug overdoses, mostly opioids, and it’s likely an undercount. In what seems to be a sea change, the current Biden administration is now touting harm reduction as one of four key pillars for responding to the opioid crisis. Key harm reduction strategies and lessons learned from around the world typically center on needle exchange programs, naloxone distribution and overdose education, drug testing kits, and supervised consumption facilities where drugs can be consumed more safely. These programs…

IS THERE A RIGHT WAY? –   Dec. 21. 2021 – That’s not to say we shouldn’t use antidepressants at all – in many instances, they save lives and work well. But the authors of the new review, which appears in the British Medical Journal’s Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin, suggest doctors should prescribe fewer antidepressants for shorter periods of time, and focus on people with severe depression. In other cases, the evidence is unclear on how effective the drugs really are – and whether the benefits outweigh the side effects. “There continues to be considerable uncertainty about the benefits of…

THERAPISTS CAN HELP – Dec. 23, 2021 – The Bottom Line: Flexibility in Treatment Is Key. Each of these individuals came from a different demographic background. Still, if their therapists had been working from an outdated, “one size fits all” framework, they would have been subject to the same fate. They would have to return to a higher level of care after their first recurrence, leaving them with the feeling that their therapists gave up on them after their first mistake. Imagine each time we made a mistake and the people we believed were supportive gave up on us…

MORE THAN NUMBING – Dec. 23, 2021 – Supportive measures can be used if a person is attended to early enough, such as resuscitation, getting them fluids and other sorts of hospital care, Hadland said. “But this is much more difficult to manage out in the community because it’s inevitably going to be an overdose that involves multiple substances including opioids,” he said. While the rate of overdose deaths where xylazine was listed as a cause of death was low at 1.2%, the report states that the animal tranquilizer’s detection may be underestimated. That’s because routine post-death toxicology tests…

When sober people picture the holidays, many of us picture a minefield of temptation and awkwardness. Even if we are just celebrating with our closest family members, we face questions and comments that could jeopardize everything we…

NEVER ENDING QUESTION? – Dec. 24, 2021 – This definition does appear to meet a number of the criteria for addiction. For example, sexual behavior becoming a central focus of an individual’s life indicates salience. Neglecting health, personal care, other interests, and responsibilities indicates conflict. Recurrent unsuccessful attempts to reduce sexual behavior might indicate relapse processes. However, there are key aspects of the addiction definition that are not present in the description of compulsive sexual behavior disorder. For example, there is no suggestion that sexual behavior becomes more frequent, intense, or deviant over time (thus not meeting the tolerance…

WEED? –   Dec. 24, 2021- During COVID lockdowns, some surveys indicate this fell even further. Our research suggests this is unlikely to be due simply to government efforts to cut youth drinking. Wider social, cultural, technological and economic changes seem to be key to these declines. Researchers conducting interview-based studies with young people in a range of countries have identified four main reasons for declining youth drinking. These are: uncertainty and worry about the future, concern about health, changes to technology and leisure, and shifting relationships with parents. Uncertain futures What it’s like to be young in developed countries…
