Sept. 10, 2026 – Continued drinking can progress to alcohol associated hepatitis, a severe inflammatory condition that may cause jaundice, fever, liver failure, and even death. Persistent injury eventually activates hepatic stellate cells, which deposit excessive collagen and scar tissue, leading to fibrosis and finally cirrhosis, where healthy liver tissue is permanently replaced by scar tissue. Women tend to move through this disease pathway more quickly than men.
